Demystifying Conservative Cooking!

Conservative Cooking is an idea/ approach towards creating a Nutritious, Healthy, Balanced and most importantly Tasty Cooked Meal.

Key points to be considered while creating a Conservatively Cooked Meal:
  • Use Minimum Heat - Don't overcook the Food, Minimal Heat for longer duration is healthier than High Heat and Quick Preparations
  • Use No or Minimum Pressure
  • Prefer Steaming of Veggies and Greens than Boiling or Frying - Minimal Boiling and Frying will be acceptable in order to create a Taste
  • Use No or Minimal Oil ( Few spoons) - Most of the Veggies can be sauteed by sprinkling water or by using tomato puree
  • Always add Spices, Salt, and Coconut after switching off the stove
  • Use Minimal Spices & Salt
  • Prefer Whole Grains, Millets, and Pulses over polished products
  • Prefer Unrefined Oil, Sugar, Salt, etc.. over refined products
  • Prefer Organic, Naturally Grown products over Chemically grown ones - While using Chemically grown foods ensure cleaning it thoroughly for few times with plain water and discard the peel if required
  • Avoid artificial taste enhancers, synthetic colors, packed products, etc.. in the cooking
  • Avoid animal products such as Diary, Honey, etc.. in the cooking
  • Avoid or Minimise use of Rajasic Foods such as Onions, Garlic, Tamarind, Chillies, etc..
  • Avoid Tamasic Foods such as Meat, Fish, Packed Products, Foods which smells/tastes unpleasant in its raw form, Spoiled Foods, etc..
  • Use Plenty of Satvic Foods such as Vegetables, Greens, Sprouts, etc.
A typical conservatively cooked meal should have 1 part of grain and 2 to 3 parts of Veggies, Sprouts, and Greens

    1. Hi Santhanalakshmi Aravind, Initially you might miss the aroma and flavor of the spices by adding the spices at the end but the aroma and flavor of the veggies, greens and sprouts are retained to maximum extent possible. By regular consumption of conservatively cooked foods one's tongue and preferences gets re sensitized and he/she will start enjoying the subtler natural flavors and aroma and dislike foods with strong taste and aroma.
